The process is fascinating. It starts with gently applying cuttlefish ink or sumi ink to the fish, which is then covered with fine Japanese paper called ‘Kozo,’ a material I mainly use for my paintings.
The paper, handled with care, captures the imprint of the ink-covered fish.

The charm of Gyotaku lies in the fact that each imprint is a direct testament to nature. No fish is the same as another, and every print is a living work of art, telling the story of the beauty and diversity of the marine world.
The use of cuttlefish ink to imprint the fish on the paper makes each painting a unique work of art, and afterwards, the same is prepared and enjoyed, without waste, honouring it to the full.
A tribute that combines art and cuisine, in a journey of respect and appreciation for the sea.
